The Arise Family Centre

Our Family Centre model of working holistically in resource-poor communities is developed to be efficient, effective, and replicable.

Groups

Our groups include both short and long course formats covering parenting, emotional understanding, and personal growth. In 2014, we began training local volunteers with basic skills in counselling to serve their own relational networks.

Individuals

Our professional psychologists and social workers deliver over 400 individual counselling and psychotherapy sessions per year to clients addressing abuse, neglect, addiction, depression, anxiety, and the effects of trauma.

Outreach

Arise initially developed an after school Bible-based outreach to local children that grew to include weekly clubs, termly holiday clubs, and annual camps. The leadership of this programme has been handed over to local churches and Arise now coordinates the holiday programmes and the coaching and mentoring of local church leaders to expand our impact and empower a new generation of leadership.

Education

In addition to an after school homework club for High School learners, Arise is using the locally-developed evidence-based WordWorks programme in two Heideveld primary schools to improve literacy in low-performing Grade 1 learners and to teach educational support skills to parents. Using a 100% local volunteer team recruited and trained by our staff, we are equipping children to succeed, reaching families, and empowering our volunteers.

and I have a specific action plan to help me reach my goals.”

Transformational Advocacy

The two prongs of our advocacy work are both focused on creating secure permanent families and both are action-oriented, leading to sustainable change.

Permanency

Currently, each of the statutory child protection organisation, each children’s home, each emergency place of safety, and each court district operate with a unique procedure for the implementation of the law and policies related to family permanency for children in institutional care. Arise is bringing each of these stakeholders together over the next several years to develop and implement a common system that will create a faster, more efficient, and more just pathway to family permanency for every child.

Adoption

Each year we invite hundreds of potential adoptive families to hear from our professional team and invited guests as we challenge parents to parent intentionally when dealing with attachment, racial identity, grief, and more. We also facilitate post-placement group support. Find out more about this year’s conference here.
